Day 1 : Arrival in Negombo

Ayubowan! Welcome to Sri Lanka. Known affectionately as the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka offers an extraordinary blend of tropical landscapes, ancient traditions, fascinating history and warm hospitality. Separated from India by the Palk Strait, this beautiful island has a history stretching back many centuries. Once known as Ceylon, the country adopted the name Sri Lanka in 1972. Arrive in Colombo this evening and continue by road to the coastal town of Negombo, where your beachfront hotel awaits. Settle in and relax after your journey.

Day 2 : Negombo

Begin your Sri Lankan adventure at a leisurely pace in Negombo, a charming coastal town overlooking a picturesque lagoon. Negombo's history is closely linked to its network of canals, many of which date back to the Dutch colonial period. Once an important centre for the cinnamon trade, the town has experienced Portuguese, Dutch and British influence. Today is intentionally unhurried. Enjoy a relaxed day at the hotel, allowing yourself time to recover from your flight and soak up the atmosphere of this tropical seaside town.

Day 3 : Negombo – Dambulla – Sigiriya

This morning, experience Negombo at its most vibrant with a visit to its bustling fish market. We then travel towards Dambulla, home to one of Sri Lanka's most remarkable cave temple complexes dating back to the 1st century. Inside the caves, ancient paintings and sculptures create an extraordinary spiritual atmosphere with more than a hundred Buddha images. Continuing into Sri Lanka's celebrated Cultural Triangle, we arrive in Sigiriya, an ideal base for exploring the country's most significant archaeological treasures.

Day 4 : Sigiriya

Today takes us away from the more familiar tourist trail to the atmospheric ruins of Ritigala. Hidden within dense forest and surrounded by enormous granite formations, this ancient Buddhist monastic complex was once a secluded centre of meditation. Moss-covered ruins, meditation platforms, natural pools and streams create an enchanting setting. This afternoon, venture into Minneriya National Park for a wildlife safari where you may encounter elephants, sambar deer and numerous bird species.

Day 5 : Sigiriya

This morning, travel to Polonnaruwa, one of Sri Lanka's great ancient cities and the island's second capital from the 11th century onwards. Spread beside a vast artificial lake, Polonnaruwa is an impressive collection of archaeological remains including ancient palaces, stupas, and beautifully executed Buddhist sculptures. Among its highlights is the magnificent Gal Vihara, renowned for its impressive rock-carved Buddha images. After lunch, return to Sigiriya and enjoy time at the hotel.

Day 6 : Sigiriya

No journey through Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle would be complete without experiencing the extraordinary Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Rising dramatically above the surrounding jungle, this ancient stronghold dates to the 5th century and was built under King Kasyapa. We set out early to explore this archaeological site. Ascending the rock, we encounter the celebrated frescoes of the Apsaras—female figures painted beneath a sheltered rock overhang approximately 90 metres above the ground. After climbing approximately 1,200 steps, the summit reveals sweeping views across the jungle and plains.

Day 7 : Sigiriya – Matale – Kandy

Today we leave Sigiriya and journey towards Kandy, with several fascinating experiences along the way. Our first stop is the Coconut House, where we gain insight into the remarkable versatility of the coconut tree. We continue to Matale, an important area for Sri Lanka's spice cultivation and visit a spice plantation. Our destination, Kandy, lies amid forested hills and tea-covered slopes around a tranquil artificial lake. On arrival, visit the revered Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of Buddhism's most important pilgrimage sites.

Day 8 : Kandy

Begin the day at the magnificent Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya, originally created as a royal park and became a botanical institution in 1821. The gardens offer an impressive collection of plants from around the world. Later, explore Kandy on a guided city tour around Kandy Lake. Walk through local streets towards the lively Kandy Market. This evening brings a vibrant finale—a traditional Kandyan cultural performance featuring music, drumming, dance, acrobatics and fire elements.

Day 9 : Kandy – Nuwara Eliya

Leave the hills of Kandy behind as we travel into Sri Lanka's celebrated tea country towards Nuwara Eliya. Often referred to as Little England, Nuwara Eliya was established by British explorer Samuel Baker in 1846. Visit one of the region's renowned tea plantations for an immersive introduction to the journey from tea leaf to finished product. Learn how leaves are handpicked and processed through different stages. Arrive at your elegant colonial hotel dating back to 1891.

Day 10 : Nuwara Eliya

Today is devoted to discovering Nuwara Eliya and its picturesque surroundings. Board the local train for a scenic journey through the spectacular landscapes of Sri Lanka's central highlands. Continue into Nuwara Eliya for a guided exploration of this historic hill town. Visit Gregory Lake and explore the lively Central Market. We then venture beyond the town to discover two spectacular waterfalls—St. Clair Falls and Devon Falls. Return to the hotel and enjoy a traditional Grand Hotel high tea.

Day 11 : Nuwara Eliya – Udawalawe – Yala

Today we descend from the highlands towards Sri Lanka's southern wilderness. Our journey takes us towards Yala, with stops at waterfalls around Ella. Visit the Elephant Transit Home in Udawalawe, an important rehabilitation centre for orphaned elephant calves. During feeding time, you may see young calves being cared for before their journey back into the wilderness. Continue onwards to Yala National Park, one of Sri Lanka's premier wildlife destinations established in 1938.

Day 12 : Yala National Park

Enjoy a relaxed morning at the hotel. This afternoon, the wilderness of Yala National Park awaits. Set out on a jeep safari through a landscape of open grasslands, lagoons and waterholes. Keep watch for the park's remarkable wildlife, from Sri Lankan elephants and wild water buffalo to the elusive Sri Lankan sloth bear. One of Yala's biggest attractions is its leopard population, renowned for its exceptional concentration of these magnificent predators.

Day 13 : Yala – Weligama – Galle

Leave the wilderness of Yala behind and head towards the southern coast and the historic city of Galle. Galle's story stretches back to the Portuguese period when it became an important trading port in the late 16th century. The Dutch later strengthened its fortifications, followed by the British. Day 14 : Galle

This morning, experience the waterways of southern Sri Lanka on a scenic Madu River cruise. Glide through mangrove-covered islands and keep an eye out for the area's rich birdlife. The waterways are surrounded by water lilies and colourful butterflies, creating a wonderfully tranquil setting. Continue to Meetiyagoda, home to a notable concentration of moonstone. Visit the Moonstone Mine and learn how these semi-precious stones are extracted. Pause at the poignant Tsunami Photograph Museum.

Day 15 : Galle – Colombo

Today we make our way to Colombo, Sri Lanka's vibrant commercial and cultural capital. Known historically as the Garden City of the East, Colombo stretches along the Indian Ocean and combines modern city life with reminders of its colonial past. The cityscape brings together tree-lined avenues, historic buildings, bustling markets, temples and churches. On arrival, enjoy a guided city tour featuring highlights including the Gangaramaya Temple and the well-known Cricket Club Café.

Day 16 : Depart Colombo

Your Sri Lankan journey comes to an end today. Enjoy your final day at leisure in Colombo. You may wish to explore more of the city independently, revisit a favourite neighbourhood or simply make the most of the facilities at your hotel.
